The great Hassidic master Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov would pray many hours daily. His disciples, who had long concluded prayers, would form a circle around him to listen to the melody of his prayers and enjoy the sight of a soul soaring in meditative devotion to G-D. It was an unspoken rule among them that no one left until the master had concluded prayers.
One day, a great fatigue and hunger befell them. One by one, they slipped home for a bite and a little rest, sure their master's prayers would continue for hours. But when they returned, he had finished praying.
"Tell us, Rebbe," they asked, "why did you conclude prayers so early?"
The Baal Shem Tov answered with a parable: Once, a group of people were journeying through a forest. The leader, who was blessed with keen eyesight, spotted a lovely bird perched atop a tall tree. "Come," he said, "I wish to capture this beautiful bird, so that we may delight in her song and admire her wondrous hues."
"But how can you reach this bird," they asked, "the tree being so high and ourselves captive by the ground?" "If you each climb onto the shoulders of your fellow," the leader said, "I will climb atop the shoulders of the topmost man and reach for the treasure that beckons from the heights."
They formed a chain reaching from the earth toward the heavens, to raise the leader upward. But they soon wearied and went off to eat and rest. The leader, who had sighted the bird, tumbled to the ground.

We are essentially not individuals. We are not isolated beings on "my" journey. To say "We are One" - this does not erase a sense of individuality, but it places that sense within the context of everyone, of G-D, our Source. We, literally, live off the inspiration of others, even as we assist them by our inspiration. For we are One, and that is so much more than an idea, a confession. I cannot know G-D without you. I can only know G-D with you. That is the absolute Truth. That is our Nature, our Gift from Grace.
